My favourite Christmas campaigns of 2015

The marketing and advertising industry had another active Christmas in 2015. Whether you’re a festive elf or Christmas Grinch it’s hard to avoid major retailers rolling out their Christmas campaigns, here’s a few that caught my eye.

The Burberry Festive Film – Celebrating 15 Years of Billy Elliot

For their 2015 Christmas campaign, Burberry recreated the opening scene of Billy Elliot. The ad had a star-studded cast and used the popular soundtrack of Cosmic Dancer by T Rex to mark the musical’s 15th anniversary. Burberry also made a donation of £500,000 to be split between two charities, Place2Be and the County Durham Community Foundation. In addition to this, none of the celebrities that took part were paid for their involvement. Burberry was bursting with Christmas spirit and emotive marketing techniques last year.

Pret a Manger Christmas charity campaign

Instead of using traditional advertising, Pret donated to five charities last Christmas. The foundations help to raise money for homeless charities around the UK. To promote the charities, the company used packaging, team members, shop windows and social media. They also created a campaign called ‘A Little Thank You’ which featured the charities stories on social media and their website.

Pret also wrapped up its shop in London’s Broadwick Street, inviting customers to unwrap the giant present. Did you see it?




Aldi Telescope Christmas Advert 2015

Aldi made headlines after releasing a clever spoof of the John Lewis ‘Man on the Moon’ Christmas advert. Aldi parodied the touching ad with its own lonely man on the moon, who was joined by his friend Jean Jones. One of Aldi’s marketing tactics was a price comparison of their own budget telescope with John Lewis’ more expensive telescope.

The John Lewis advert has been viewed around 5.9 million times within the first 24 hours of it appearing on YouTube. Aldi’s offering was watched just under 7,000 times in the 14 hours after it was uploaded.


Matalan Beanie vs Bobble campaign

Following the extremely successful Alphabet Scarves campaign last year, Matalan launched their next Christmas charity campaign in aid of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity. The campaign encouraged consumers to purchase a hat and choose a side – Beanie or Bobble and share photos across social media channels. Celebrities also took part in the campaign to promote the hats as a wardrobe must-have by tagging their snaps as #ImaBeanie or #ImaBobble. This was an engaging and playful way to involve customers with the brand.
